History

The village of Brinscall meaning ‘burnt huts’ lies in the valley at the foot of the West Pennine Moors off the A674 Blackburn to Chorley road. Brinscall owes its development to both farming and the cotton industry.

When the cotton industry came to Lancashire in the 19th century, a thriving community of hand loom weavers existed in the valley area. William Christopher Wood built the present Brinscall Hall in 1867 and a calico print works which finally closed in 1928. The ruins of many of these buildings are now surrounded by woodland which is a popular destination for hikers and ramblers and is a nature conservation area.

Brinscall boasts one of the oldest remaining examples of a traditional swimming pool in the country, built in 1911 to celebrate the coronation of King George V. The pool occupies a unique position in the heritage of the village and many generations from Brinscall and surrounding villages have learned to swim here.

The swimming pool like the village cricket field was donated to the community by the local industrialist and land owner Herbert J. Parke.

To find the cricket field leave the M65 at junction 3 take the A674 (signposted Wheelton) towards Chorley. After approximately 1.5 miles take the first left into Bury Lane. Follow this road through the village of Withnell turning right into Railway Road at the bottom of the hill. Follow Railway Road until it bends to the right and becomes School Lane. The cricket field is at the top of the hill on the right.
